ExtendRebar

Extends the selected reinforcements to a concrete element's cover or to another reinforcement.

General Description

Revit's native Extend tool works on model lines and walls but not on reinforcement, so making a bar reach a specific place has to be done by hand. ExtendRebar automates it: select one or more reinforcements and a target, and the nearest end of each bar is constrained to that target. The target can be a concrete element — the bar reaches that element's face cover — or another reinforcement, for example extending column bars down to the footing mat. The operation edits the existing element in place using Revit's rebar constraints — the bar is never deleted or recreated, so its bar type, diameter, hooks, mark, layout, spacing and every other parameter are preserved. Because the end is constrained (not just moved once), it keeps following the target if the geometry changes later.

Key Features

  • Extends one or many reinforcements to a concrete element's cover, or to another reinforcement, in a single command
  • Edits each bar in place — same element, keeping bar type, hooks, mark, layout and all parameters
  • Constrains the bar's nearest end with Revit's rebar constraints, so it tracks later changes
  • Runs in a single transaction, so one undo reverts everything

Requirements

  • Works on shape-driven reinforcements only (Revit rebar created from a rebar shape, not free-form).
  • The target must be one Revit offers as a constraint for the bar's end — a concrete element that hosts or is attached to the bar's host, or a nearby reinforcement — i.e. the same targets available in Revit's manual constraint editor.
  • Revit 2024 or higher.

Usage Procedure

The Extend Rebar split button on the Structure panel offers two commands.

Extend to Face — constrain the bars to a concrete face's cover:

  1. Run Extend to Face.
  2. Follow the prompt: "Select the reinforcements to extend, then press Finish."
  3. Follow the prompt: "Select the target face — the reinforcements will extend to its cover." Click the concrete element on the face you want the bars to reach.

Extend to Bar — constrain the bars to another reinforcement (for example column bars to the footing mat):

  1. Run Extend to Bar.
  2. Follow the prompt: "Select the reinforcements to extend, then press Finish."
  3. Follow the prompt: "Select the target reinforcement to extend the bars to."

In both cases the nearest end of each selected bar is constrained to the target automatically — no further input is needed.

Recommendations

  • Undo (Ctrl+Z) reverts the whole operation, since it runs in a single transaction.
  • For a concrete target, click on the face you want the bars to reach — that face's cover is used. For a rebar-to-rebar target, pick the reinforcement the bars should reach (e.g. the footing mat).
  • Pick a target related to the reinforcement's host or an adjacent concrete element; an unrelated one is not a valid constraint and the bar will be skipped.

Frequently Asked Questions

I got the message "None of the selected reinforcements could be constrained to that target. It must be a reinforcement or a concrete element that Revit offers as a constraint for the bar's nearest end." Why? The target you picked is not a constraint that Revit offers for those bars' ends. Pick a concrete element that hosts or is attached to the bar's host, or a reinforcement close enough to constrain to.

I got the message "{0} reinforcement(s) extended; {1} could not be constrained to that target." Why? Some bars reached the target, but others could not — usually because they are free-form, or because that target is not valid for their nearest end. The ones that succeeded are still extended.

Can I extend several reinforcements at once? Yes — select multiple reinforcements before pressing Finish; each is constrained independently within the same transaction.
